Recently recognised by the Independent as one of the best 3 vegbox services in the UK, Boxxfresh are an award-winning local ‘pick your own’ on-line vegbox delivery business based on a farm in Titchfield, Hampshire.
The only criticism the Independent could level at Boxxfresh was that they were constrained to delivering to customers within their Hampshire catchment - something which changed recently in July this summer when the Boxxfresh service was launched nationwide.
“Expanding from the south coast to a nationwide service was always something we hoped would happen with Boxxfresh, but it took the positive feedback from the Independent to give us the confidence boost we needed,” said Kelly Barfoot, founder.
Their research to find a logistics partner that would help them grow without increasing their environmental footprint led to a chance meeting with Zedify; a zero-emissions urban logistics start-up, which had recently launched in the area following expansion across major cities in the UK.
The outcome of this chance encounter was a successful pilot test throughout August, from which Boxxfresh will start to deliver to Portsmouth, Winchester and Southampton postcodes from September using zero-emissions electric cargo ‘e-bikes’ and ‘e-vans’ from the Zedify hub.
“We’re delighted at the outcome of our test collaboration with Zedify. Customers repeatedly tell us they choose Boxxfresh for our eco-credentials such as our ‘Naked Veg Pledge’ to remove single-use plastics, and that they are looking for ways to reduce their own environmental footprint - so it makes complete sense to take our commitment to sustainability further with urban deliveries made in zero-emissions vehicles.” comments Jon Barfoot, Kelly’s business partner and sustainable agriculture specialist.
There’s something quite romantic and nostalgic about the notion of a bicycle carrying farm-fresh veggies to customer’s doorsteps; which, with the state of the art e-bike’s cargo capacity of 40 vegboxes on a single route, Boxxfresh expects to save several tonnes of CO2 emissions annually from Portsmouth, Southampton and Winchester’s streets. Proving an old fashioned delivery method using modern technology can provide a winning solution for all.
With UK supermarkets coming under fire for producing a staggering 59 billion pieces of plastic a year and struggling to remove their reliance on it, Boxxfresh’s timing couldn’t be better in providing a sustainable alternative for the shift in consumer conscious away from plastic covered vegetables and CO2 pollution.
“Locally grown fresh produce is inherently healthy, so we need to find delivery solutions to keep it that way without the food miles or faff of supermarkets. The only limit to the success of the Boxxfresh e-bike delivery service will be bringing enough new customers on board and make the service efficient. We will be talking with new customers throughout local PO postcodes to win their support for our zero-emissions service with Zedify.”
